Five essential elements for a happy retirement
|
In over 25 years of working in pensions, one thing that stands out more than any other aspect of trusteeship is the genuine concern for the welfare of the pensioner members of schemes.
Often backed by sponsoring employers that share a paternalistic view to former employees, some schemes go beyond the normal call of duty providing access to a range of benefits and services beyond the usual retirement benefits.
Retirement is, more often than not, ‘cliff-edged’: an employee on Friday and then a pensioner on Monday. Whilst that might suit most employees, it certainly won’t be greeted with delight by everyone.
So, reports like this one from the Institute for Public Policy Research will be of interest to many trustees, and I’d imagine to some HR departments too.
The report identifies five ‘essential elements’ of wellbeing in later life:
