Panorama lights the touch fuse and stands back

Tonight, BBC’s Panorama programme looks like it’s about to blow the lid off the proverbial retirement jam jar. I’ll take a guess that the phrase ‘pension time bomb’ or something similar will be used, and it’s unlikely to be the kind of pension education programme that we’d like to see given that it will probably be full of negatives and too few positives.

Doom and gloom in the form of pension deficits, crumbling stock markets, slashed dividends and tumbling annuity rates might be what people working in the pension sector read about daily.

However, for the majority of people saving for retirement the occasional bad pension news is consigned to the newspaper recycling bin within a matter of days and either largely forgotten or ignored. But remember, we’ve just started with the baby boomers demographic bubble reaching retirement age and there are millions of people only now beginning to realise that their nest-eggs aren’t going to produce what they’d expected of them.
