Pensions vs bonuses
|
Barclays held an extraordinary meeting yesterday the purpose of which was to approve the sale of Barclays Global Investors. Whilst almost universally backed by shareholders, an article in FT.com quotes one investor Marcus Rodrigues who ‘…questioned whether some of the capital raised from the sale would be injected into the pension fund.’
Barclays’ final salary scheme moved from a surplus to a several billion pound deficit in the space of a year. Some shareholders used the meeting to call for the use of part of the £8bn proceeds of the sale of Barclays Global Investors towards the company’s pension scheme. Barclays has recently undergone consultation with staff about closing the final salary scheme to future accrual.
The FT.com article further quotes Mr Rodrigues as saying to the Barclays Board, " . . . you can make a contribution to the pension fund and make sure your own staff are well treated . . . Why do you treat them this way and treat senior directors with large bonuses?"’ See:
