Three elements make up a retirement journey

Watson Wyatt has released a research report entitled Journey planning – a more engaging approach. It looks at ways of how best to encourage greater engagement of members of defined contribution schemes. The report breaks down what it classes as a typical retirement journey into three common elements: contributions, investment risk and retirement date.
Historically, many members of DC schemes rely upon default strategies when building up their pension pots. However, communicating risk can be difficult. In fact, I’m a little surprised that Watson’s report didn’t look at the different types of risk associated with pension planning but I understand why they have focused upon investment risk.
